The thicker grades of mylar 7, 10 and 14 mil increase in durability, but are tougher to cut. These require either a hot knife, a commercial-grade cutter, or a laser cutter. They also become milkier is they are thicker and 14 mil is difficult to trace cut. The also become somewhat stiffer. We do not recommend 14 mil for rounded surfaces. However, these stencils can be cleaned and with proper care can last for hundreds of uses.

Our stencil material is specifically formulated to cut clean and sharp with a CO2 laser, as well as with a XActo knife, stencil burner, or computer generated machine like the Cricut Maker or Silhouette Cameo. We offer popular sizes of our stencil material in sheet form, and larger sizes in roll form.
Polyester film is found everywhere through the world in products such as food-safe bags, food and beverage containers, packaging and printing, and electronic insulation. A slim fraction of the polyester sheets produced are used for stencils, or any other graphic arts application.
Mylar polyester films are used in a wide variety of applications. One application that may not be as widely known, but is a growing market is stencils. Many people think of crafters when they think of stencils, but the handy tools are gaining momentum in home décor (think tile and backsplashes) and businesses (wayfinding signage) and even by DIY clothing designers to create unique fashions. Two of the most common stencils are plastic stencil sheets and metal stencil sheets.
You can also try laminate sheets. I was on Pinterest one day and saw a Silhouette blogger made stencils with laminate sheets. I thought this was genius so I dug out my laminator and gave it a try for myself.
You can see the difference, if we cut this font using mylar sheets we would lose the centers of the letters. The next step to adding a bridge is to click on shapes on the left menu and select the square.

First you want to think about whether or not you want to reuse these stencils. Some are adhesive and others are not. The adhesive sheets or rolls are only meant for a one time use such as decorating a piece of wood or decorating a pillowcase. Though they are a one time use, they usually come in large rolls to compensate for their single use. If you need them to be reusable such as decorating cupcakes for a bake sale, then you would want some non-adhesive sheets that are durable, easy to clean, and strong. They are both usually around the same price range, it just depends on how long you would need them for.
4 mil Mylar : All of the mylars make great stencils. We recommend 4 mil for DIY stencils as they cut easily and still make an effective stencil for most uses. 4 mil cuts easily with a scalpel knife. We also recommend 4 mil for electric cutters like Cricuts and Silhouettes.

Stencils for cookie decorating are usually made from a thin plastic material (mylar). These plastic sheet stencils can be used to airbrush and they can also be used with royal icing. And they can be washed and reused many times.
Most stencils are made of heavy-duty paper or plastic (such as vinyl or Mylar). Paper stencils typically come in rolls, like wrapping paper, that cover approximately 1,000 square feet or, in the case of borders, 100 to 300 lineal feet. You can also buy smaller half rolls of 500 square feet as well as circular designs or rosettes sold as individual sheets. The best-quality paper stencils are made of tear-resistant paper or cardboard covered with a water-resistant waxy coating to prevent deterioration and to ease release. Pattern options are generally limited to repeating designs such as brick, slate, tile or cobblestone.
Plastic stencils come in sheets, rather than rolls, and are well-suited for projects requiring custom designs. They tend to be more resilient than paper stencils and can be cut into more intricate patterns, permitting unlimited designs (see "Stock or Custom?"). The size of the stencil will vary depending on the pattern, but the typical sheet size is 4x8 feet.
For new concrete, paper stencils are generally the best choice, especially if you are covering a large area. That's because when stenciling newly poured concrete, you need enough stencil material to cover the entire surface, which could become cost-prohibitive when buying individual sheets of plastic. Plastic stencils are also less flexible and can be difficult to float into new concrete.
To make traditional cookie stencils(the kind that has images or words that need bridges added and also background stencils), you need a food grade plastic type material. This plastic is durable and safe to use on your cookies. The Grafix Food Safe stencil material is amazing! I love it! It is my cookie pic on the packaging. That is how much I love it! They sell both the thinner 005 mil and the thicker 0075 mil. It is perfect for cookie stencils. It is translucent, so you can see through it very well, but it is not transparent. There are 25 sheets in a package. That equals 100 stencils if you made no mistakes, which probably won't happen, but still, if you cut 80 successfully, that means each stencil costs approx 26 cents(at the time of writing this blog post) if you are cutting from the .0075 material!! Yes! I said approx 26 cents per stencil and even less if prices of the materials drop or you are cutting from the .005 material!! **Note: I prefer cutting the heavier .0075 on my Cricut and the thinner .005 on my Silhouette Cameo.

I find the Maker works slightly better with the deep cut knife and sometimes will use it with the Grafix/mylar sheets. In this scenario, it really depends on the brand. I would play around with the different settings under the plastic category.
