The completed product was then fabricated into spools for shipping. The modern mill is capable of producing thousands of tons of rolled product per week with a single shift. The process involves the rolling of metal at a temperature of up to 1200°F (650°C) to a thinness that is controlled by a computerized feed system. The accurate measurement of this product is also done by computer, which controls the speed of the rolling. Several types of mills are used depending on the particular product and the thicknesses needed. Some mills are equipped to roll a continuous length of metal; for this type, the roll is continuously advanced during operation.
By the late 1930s, grinding and rolling was largely mechanized, with nearly all of the roughing, roughing and finishing, and finishing operations being performed automatically. Only the coiling and rolling of fine wire remained.
The earliest automatic systems were not of the automatic winding type but the machine would roll some thin metal strip for a quick change. The machine would stop when a full roll was made and then automatically start winding on the next roll. The earliest automatic winding machine was developed by the Endicott Machine Company in the 1890s. In 1900, the Endicott machine was the first to wind a steel strip with a full circumference up to 1200 ft (365 m). The Endicott machine was used extensively in local nail manufacturing until well into the twentieth century, and was mechanized with electric motors in the 1920s. The first automatic unwinding system was developed by the American Rolling Mill Company. In 1907, the machine automatically rolled a steel strip of up to 500 ft (152 m) in circumference.
In 1936, the Endicott company introduced a machine which could automatically unwind a strip and automatically coil it on a second roll. The factory still exists and is now called the Rolling Mill Museum. This was the first automatic winding machine to be exported; it was installed in an automotive plant in Argentina in the 1930s.
In 1913, the Endicott company, which had been purchased by the Bethlehem Steel Company, introduced a machine with the ability to automatically unwind, after it had been wound with other strip. In 1924, the Bethlehem Steel rolled a machine that was capable of automatically rolling and automatically unwinding a metal strip for a length of more than 1000 ft (304 m). The 1920s machines were often powered by electricity.
